HARD ROCK HOTEL AND CASINO
What to expect: Independently owned and unaffiliated with the Hard Rock Café or other Hard Rock hotels, this Las Vegas resort is casual and coolly contemporary. Guests enter under a 90-foot neon guitar into a hotel bursting with rock memorabilia, including some 600 costumes, guitars, and concert posters.
Amenity highlights: A three-acre water playground includes two connected sand-beach lagoon pools (open seasonally), a spiral-tunnel water slide, a grotto bar, and four roomy spa tubs. Three swim-up blackjack tables are available in addition to blackjack and craps tables located in a central gazebo. Thatched-roof cabanas with flat-screen televisions, phones, and ceiling fans are available for rent. Rock music provides a continuous soundtrack for all the action.
TREASURE ISLAND HOTEL AND CASINO
What to expect: Treasure Island’s edgy personality is most popular with adults who pursue an active lifestyle. Companion properties include the neighboring Mirage and the opulent Bellagio, farther south on the Strip. An elevated tram leaves for the Mirage every four minutes. A pedestrian bridge connects the hotel to the adjacent Fashion Show Mall.
Amenity highlights: Guests may rent pool cabanas furnished with a television and telephone. The freeform pool is heated, and the spa tub accommodates 50 adults. The hotel’s spa, Wet, offers a wealth of services for women and men, as well as hair and nail treatments, steam rooms, saunas, spa tubs, and a fitness center (surcharges). This is the place to go to see the pirates fighting each other in their ships. I have never seen the show yet but I am told it is great.
WYNN LAS VEGAS
We went to the Wynn on our last trip to Vegas, on the day it opened. This place is huge, it has a Ferrari dealership inside the hotel.
The large spa offers massage, body treatments, facials, and hydrotherapy, as well as a steam room and sauna; Le Rêve, an aquatic spectacular, is performed in a domed theatre-in-the-round.
What to expect: Created by hotel impresario Steve Wynn, this lavish, $2.7-billion resort opened in spring 2005. The curved building, sheathed in bronze-tinted glass, stands like a beacon at the northern end of the Las Vegas Strip. A pine-covered artificial mountain with shimmering waterfalls rises at the entrance. The light-filled lobby is a floral fantasy, brimming with spheres of colorful blooms. Parasols suspended from the ceiling dance up and down in time to music.
Amenity highlights: Centred on a three-acre lake illuminated with thousands of color-changing lights, the Lake of Dreams is a multimedia show encompassing music, light, art, and natural elements.
In addition to dozens of designer boutiques such as Cartier, Dior, Manolo Blahnik, and Chanel, the resort features a Ferrari and Maserati showroom (admission charged for showroom entrance).
A vast outdoor pool comprises a long section with an oval area at either end, and a bridge spanning the center. Internationally acclaimed chefs, including Daniel Boulud, showcase their creations at a wide array of restaurants. Le Rêve, an aquatic spectacular, is presented in a domed theatre.
BARBARY COAST HOTEL AND CASINO
The Barbary Coast is located midway down the famed Las Vegas Strip, across from the Bellagio’s spectacular fountain and water show, and less than 2 miles from the convention center. Decked out in Vegas-style Victoriana, the Barbary Coast offers a casino with slots and table games, as well as complimentary shuttles to the Orleans, Suncoast, and Gold Coast hotels.
